Muscle relaxing injections can be used to specifically target hyperactive or overactive muscles of the face. Excessive muscle activity can lead to gummy smiles or the development of lines and wrinkles. With age these lines will deepen as the skins elasticity reduces.
Treatments can be used to reduce muscle activity resulting in softened established lines and preventing further deepening. When treating the upper face we can correct mild asymmetries of the eyebrow position but also give a subtle brow lift to those patients who feel that they may be starting to feel heavy around the eye area.
Treating the muscles around the side of the eye (crow’s feet) will prevent narrowing of the eye when you are showing off that all important smile!
Muscle relaxing injections use botulinum toxin. This has been used of a number of medical conditions including bladder weakness and hyperhidrosis (excess sweating). In aesthetic medicine it has been used more commonly on muscles in the upper face (frown, forehead and crow’s feet) as well as to treat gummy smiles and bruxism (patients that grind their teeth).
As this is not a permanent treatment, the effects will wear off over time, so the procedure can be repeated every 3 months for effective results.
